Those who can’t wait until July to take a dip in some chilly water will have their opportunity at the beginning of March.

Junior Achievement of Hardin County will host a Penguin Plunge on March 3 at the headquarters of Bluegrass Cellular, title sponsor for the event. Participants who can raise at least $50 can dive into a pool donated by Walmart, complete with bags of ice. Registration is at 10 a.m.

Junior Achievement works to bring lessons on financial literacy into classrooms and includes topics such as business and economics.

The Hardin County Board of Directors of Junior Achievement was looking for a new twist for one of their yearly fundraisers, member Lindsey Alicna said. Members had seen similar events elsewhere and thought it would be a good way to raise money for the county program.

“We wanted to do something new and exciting,” Alicna said.

The group also was looking to raise the profile of their organization, which they feel isn’t well known by the general public, she said.

Alicna said participants can register until the day of the event. They have about 15 people signed up and are hoping to reach 50, she said. She joked that warmer weather might be making the event seem more palatable.

The group hopes to raise $10,000 from the event, which will go to all areas of the organization.

Alicna also encourages participants to arrive in costume. A costume parade will take place at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone interested can register for the event at www.2012japeng uinplunge.kintera.org.

Pledge forms can be found at www.jaky.org or by calling Alicna at (270) 737-7377.
