Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown is collecting donated food items for the third annual Cram the Cruiser.

The statewide effort continues through Dec. 14 after which the nonperishable items will be distributed to families in each post’s area, according to KSP.

In 2011, Post 4 collected more than 3,500 pounds while, statewide, KSP collected 49,668 pounds.

Post 4 spokesman Norman Chaffins said the Elizabethtown post’s goal this year is to reach more than 7,000 pounds, which would double last year’s collection.

The post, which covers eight counties, has partnered with some schools, such as North Hardin Christian School in Radcliff, to collect donated items, Chaffins said. He said he is trying to reach out to more schools.

“It’s good because whatever we collect in Hardin County stays in Hardin County,” Chaffins said. “It doesn’t go to Frankfort. It helps families in our area.”

In the Post 4 area, he said donated items will go to food pantries and churches.

Last year, the post delivered more than 1,000 pounds of food items to Helping Hand of Hope.

Those interested in donating items can deliver them to KSP Post 4, off North Mulberry Street near the Interstate 65 southbound Exit 94 exit ramp in Elizabethtown.
