Kentucky State Police is searching for an inmate who walked away from custody last Friday while he was taking classes at the former jail site on Mulberry Street.
Jailer Danny Allen said Robert W. Wilson, 23, of Elizabethtown, was lodged Oct. 1 at the jail on probation violations.
According to Allen, one of Wilson’s original charges was second-degree rape.
Hardin Circuit Judge Ken Howard ordered Wilson to complete a substance abuse program and set a $5,000 cash bond, the jailer said.
According to Allen, Wilson repeatedly told jail deputies “he was not supposed to be there” and “his grandmother was going to post his bond.”
Inmates in SAP take drug and alcohol education classes at the former jail, Allen said.
Wilson was in the trustee building behind Hardin County Annex when he became unruly, making repeated complaints about how he was not supposed to be in jail, Allen said.
The deputy at the site was working alone, he said, and, because of Wilson’s behavior, decided to have him transported back to the detention center.
The deputy was in the process of signing Wilson out to transport him back to the detention center, he said.
However, when the deputy’s back was turned, Wilson exited the trustee building and kicked open a gate entrance, Allen said, which is the only locked barrier at the site.
The jailer said he believes Wilson has contacted his family since his escape but has not been apprehended.
Wilson is a white male, 6-foot-3 and 158 pounds, according to the jail. Allen described Wilson as having a “slim build” and “strawberry-colored hair.”
While Allen was on vacation last week, he said the jail staff notified him and area law enforcement agencies last Friday. However, until Thursday, he was unaware media were not notified of the escape.
Norman Chaffins, spokesman for KSP Post 4, said Thursday he had not received any information from the trooper investigating the case but intended to send out a release to media today.
