A Leitchfield man has pleaded guilty in federal court to allegations of possession and distribution of child pornography via the Internet.

Michael Brandon Thompson, 29, pleaded guilty Wednesday to possession of child pornography and two counts of distribution, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Kentucky.

Thompson admitted in court to using a peer-to-peer file sharing network during a seven-week period in 2011 to allow others to download images of child pornography, officials said.

According to the criminal complaint, a Colorado Springs, Colo., detective downloaded password-protected files from Thompson. During that download, he was able to preview 300 video files depicting children engaged in sexual conduct.

The detective contacted Kentucky State Police and state troopers executed a search warrant at Thompson’s home where they seized computer equipment and digital storage devices, according to the complaint.

“A forensic examination of those items revealed tens of thousands of videos and still images of child pornography, including the depictions of infants being sexually abused,” the news release reads.

KSP conducted the investigation through Kentucky’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Thompson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison, officials said. The maximum potential sentence is 50 years.

A formal sentencing is set for Nov. 15, according to the release.
