An Elizabethtown businessman whose funeral is today is remembered by his colleagues as a “tireless worker.”
Robert “Bob” Schaffner was born in Muncie, Ind., and died Wednesday at age 86.
He retired after working for 23 years as the first general manager for Fort Knox Federal Credit Union and retired again in 1988 after serving as president of Citizens Bank of Elizabethtown.
Schaffner was also affiliated with the Kentucky Credit Union League for 20 years and was a board member for the Defense Credit Union Council for 12 years.
Bill Rissel, president and chief executive officer of Fort Know Federal Credit Union, said in a statement that Schaffner was a driving force in the founding and formative years of the credit union.
“The Fort Knox FCU would not exist today without Bob’s hard work and tireless efforts,” he said. “We grieve his loss.”
Besides Schaffner’s business involvement, he was also known for being involved in various ministries at Northside Baptist Church in Elizabethtown and Stithton Baptist Church in Radcliff, where he was a deacon for more than 30 years. He was also a member of Radcliff Gideon Camp for more than 15 years.
The funeral is planned for 10 a.m. today at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown. Interment will follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff.
