KSP: Driver swerved into bridge abutment

By Gina Clear

A single-vehicle crash Friday morning on Interstate 65 at the Tunnel Hill Road overpass fatally injured the driver.

Donald Wood, 64, of Louisville, was airlifted to University Hospital in Louisville after witnesses say his 2005 Honda CR-V swerved for unknown reasons and struck a bridge abutment, according to Kentucky State Police Trooper Chris Rafferty. Wood was traveling southbound when the wreck occurred.

According to Lt. Martin Baumgardner of the Elizabethtown Fire Department, Wood was trapped in the vehicle and rescuers had to pull the dash off of him.

Wood was not very responsive, but conscious when he was flown out, Baumgardner said. He later died.

The crash still is under investigation. Wood was alone in his vehicle.

Hardin County EMS also responded to the emergency call.
