Member of 3/1 dies in Afghanistan

Florida native deployed from Fort Knox

A Fort Knox soldier died Saturday of injuries sustained when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. 1st Class William K. Lacey, 38, of Laurel, Fla., was a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to Company F, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

He joined the U.S. Army in January 2003 and arrived at Fort Knox in January 2013. Lacey was on his fifth deployment, having served three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.

Lacey, who earned multiple awards and decorations including a Bronze Star, was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Fort Knox and 3/1 will hold Duke Remembrance ceremonies on post and in Afghanistan in Lacey’s honor. The times and dates have not been determined.
