Based on criteria developed by the school's site-based decision-making council with input from Morningside stakeholders, “we’re pleased that we feel like we’ve found the perfect person,” EIS Superintendent Jon Ballard said. “She has shown through the years to be an outstanding educator, a proven instructional leader and we’re very fortunate to have her with us.”

A University of Louisville graduate, Buckingham received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the school. She earned an administration degree at Western Kentucky University.

Her career started in 1994 as a teacher in Nelson County. Buckingham was hired as a fifth-grade teacher at Morningside in 2005 and has spent 10 years in that role.

“We all know that that's what drives everything, if you have that true passion for kids,” Ballard said Friday during an announcement ceremony. “If it’s not just something you talk about but it really comes from the heart. We know we have that in Karla.”

Buckingham officially starts her duties as principal Tuesday on a designated professional development day.

Her first administrative role, Buckingham said she is excited to be on the leadership side of the school and in the district.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know every teacher as an instructor and having that time to get to visit each classroom and see all of the kids in a different way that I’ve never seen before,” Buckingham said.

Buckingham told staff members who were present at her welcome celebration and news conference Friday afternoon that she has every intention of moving the school forward and doing great things. She said some of the areas she wants to focus on are reading, math and science instruction.

“We have started so many things with the reading and math instruction so continuing to move that forward (is a goal of mine),” she said. “And getting everybody ready to implement those new science standards the way they need to be implemented.”
