The driver of a vehicle that was struck by an oncoming Transit Authority of Central Kentucky bus Thursday morning while taking her daughter to school succumbed Saturday to her injuries.
Elizabeth Diane Price, 35, died from injuries suffered in the three-vehicle wreck on Joe Prather Highway in Radcliff. Price, a North Hardin High School graduate, was dropping off her daughter, Kari Cook, a fifth-grader at Woodland Elementary School.
Kari is listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
According to Radcliff Police spokesman Bryce Shumate, Price and Kari underwent surgery Thursday evening. As of Friday, both were listed in critical condition.
Shumate was unsure of the status of the third individual involved in the collision who was treated for injuries Thursday at Hardin Memorial Hospital, he said.
Hardin County Schools spokesman John Wright said Woodland Elementary faculty and staff spoke with the entire fifth-grade class Friday morning about Kari’s status.
“They talked about that this student was involved in an auto accident and that we need to be thinking of her,” he said.
According to Wright, counseling is available to any student who wants to discuss the issue.
Price and her daughter were traveling around 7:15 a.m. in a Chevrolet Geo Tracker, which was stopped in an eastbound lane on Ky. 313 to turn left onto Wiselyn Drive to go to Woodland Elementary, according to police.
While there is a left turn lane at Ky. 313 and Education Avenue, there is not one at the intersection at Wiselyn Drive, Shumate said.
For unknown reasons, a concrete pump truck, also eastbound on Ky. 313, failed to stop and collided with the rear of the Tracker, police said.
The force of the collision pushed the SUV into oncoming traffic, and a westbound Transit Authority of Central Kentucky bus struck the side of the Tracker, according to police.
Asked about the possibility of a school zone in that area of Ky. 313, Chris Jessie, spokesman for Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 4, said while Woodland Elementary is adjacent to the highway, its entrance is at a county roadway.
Because it’s not accessed directly from a state roadway, Jessie said the school must request to establish a school zone in that area of Ky. 313.
“We have never received or denied a request to put a school zone there,” Jessie said.
He added, “If the school were to request something, we don’t typically deny that.”
By comparison, Jessie and Shumate pointed out there is a school zone on Ky. 313 in the area of North Middle School.
However, Shumate said the entrance to the middle school is at the highway.
Coffey and Chism Funeral Home in Vine Grove is in charge of Price’s funeral arrangements.
