Multiple wrecks, I-65 south re-opens, games postponed

Winter weather advisory in effect until 2 p.m. today

Icy conditions arrived in Hardin County shortly after 4 a.m. today and roads soon were becoming hazardous.

Police, emergency crews and Transportation Cabinet officials have confronted problems resulting from the treacherous weather.

Crews have been able to access I-65 and treat southbound lanes between Elizabethtown and Upton. Addressing the condition of the road was necessary before allowing motorists to continue. Traffic has been released and the interstate is open southbound.

Northbound has one lane open.

From Hardin County Schools: The Central Hardin at North Hardin boys' basketball game scheduled for tonight has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The John Hardin at Nelson County girls' game also has been called off.

· NO buses will run tonight in the Hardin County School district for any reason (games, competitions, etc)

· NO buses will run Saturday before 8 a.m. (games, competitions, etc). If a student was scheduled to board a bus before 8 a.m. to travel somewhere, the trip will be postponed. A decision about the rest of the day’s travel at or before 8 a.m.

Motorists are advised to use extreme caution or limit their travel in areas where freezing rain is falling. Conditions can deteriorate very quickly, making travel nearly impossible.

Police and rescue crews were called to mile-marker 83 on Interstate 65 shortly after 4 a.m. where a motorist was trapped in an overturned vehicle in the southbound lanes. About an hour later, police received reports of multiple trucks jackknifed around the Glendale exit, which also was blocking southbound traffic. Dozens of traffic collision also have been reported around the area.

School closings have been announced by Hardin County, Elizabethtown Independent Schools, Grayson, LaRue, Meade, Breckinridge and Nelson counties plus Gloria Dei Lutheran School, Elizabethtown Montessori Children's Center and Daycare, Elizabethtown Christian Academy and Leitchfield Christian Academy. West Point Independent Schools also is now closed after originally looking at a two-hour delay.

The region bowling tournament has been postponed from today until 10 a.m. Monday.

A wintry mix predicted by the National Weather Service arrived on schedule with freezing rain and sleet. Despite preparations by road crews, icy conditions formed on surfaces, particularly bridges and overpasses, complicating travel.

A mix of rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected, according to the forecast, with light icing across the region. Some snow accumulation is possible from the front.
