National Library Week is April 10-16

The Hardin County Public Library, located at 100 Jim Owen Drive in Elizabethtown, is offering many special activities and events for children and youth to celebrate National Library Week, April 10-16.

One event is the Bookmark Contest. To enter, pick up a bookmark template at the library. On the template draw an original design that tells why you love reading. Each entry will be judged on creativity and neatness. Judging will be divided into six age categories: preschool, grades K-2, grades 3-5, grades 5-7, grades 8-10 and grades 11-12. The final day to enter a bookmark is April 30.

Children age 4 to 8 can enjoy Marvelous, Musical Monday from 4:30 to 5:30- p.m. on April 11, a storytime about music. Participants will sing songs, read rhyming stories and make a melodious craft.

Children age 5 to 12 can participate in a Uno tournament from 5 to 6 p.m. April 12. Children will play in small groups, and the winners will play a final round to determine the winner. The library will provide cards and snacks. No registration required.

The Book Buzz class at 3:30 p.m. April 12 will have a special guest, Mascot Big Red from Western Kentucky University, and the group will read “Big Red’s Spirited Adventure” and learn what the phrase “The Spirit Makes the Master” means.

Duct Tape Extravaganza will be offered from 4 to 5 p.m. April 13 for youth age 10 and older. Participants will learn how to make wallets, flip-flops, bracelets, flowers and more out of duct tape, which will be provided by the library.

There will be a special Toddler Time from 11 a.m. to noon on April 14. Station 1 Fire Headquarters will present a fire safety program to the toddlers. Also Miss Heartland’s Outstanding Teen Emma Parks will read ‘Stop, Drop and Roll.”

Children age 4 to 8 can drop in for Friday Fairy Tales from 4 to 5 p.m. on April 15.

Other events this month include egg hunts during the week of April 18. The Preschool Story Hour, Book Buzz and Toddler Time classes will have egg hunts; bring a basket and help find eggs all over the library. Register for storytime by calling 769-6337.

Around the World Storytime will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 25; participants will venture to China, discussing history, reading stories and making a craft project. The event is for children age 4 to 8. No registration is required.

Toddler Time participants will have a special program on pet care, selection and safety from 11 a.m. to noon on April 28. Raylene McCormick a vet technician at Heartland Veterinary Hospital will present the program. There will also be two special guests – a dog and cat. Participants will make an animal craft and read an animal story.

The final week for all regular story hour classes at the Hardin County Public Library will be May 9-14. Registration for the Summer Reading Program will begin on June 1. For information on any of the above events, call 769-6337.
