ELIZABETHTOWN — Bryan Lewis, currently an assistant principal at Lincoln Trail Elementary School, was named principal at G.C. Burkhead Elementary School. He will begin his new position July 1.
Lewis previously worked at G.C. Burkhead as interim principal during the 2004-2005 school year. Superintendent Nannette Johnston said Lewis’ familiarity with G.C. Burkhead was a plus for the search committee.
“They wanted someone who brings an understanding of their school,” Johnston said.
Lewis also attended G.C. Burkhead in the fifth grade. He is a Central Hardin High School graduate and Lewis taught at Parkway Elementary School before serving as interim principal at G.C. Burkhead.
Lewis, who was out of town and unavailable for comment, was excited to hear of his selection, according to a news release from Hardin County Schools.
“It will be a pleasure to serve the students, teachers and parents at that school,” he said in the release.
There were several other criteria that the search committee was looking for, including availability to students, staff and parents, and instructional leadership, Johnston said.
Lewis will replace Curt Haun, who resigned May 15. Before Haun was named Burkhead’s principal in April 2007, retired principal Donnie Lynch served as an interim beginning in Dec. 2006, and retired principal Ann Caspar served as an interim from July 2006 until December.
The previous permanent principal, Liz Tabb, left in June 2006 to become the district’s family resource and youth services center coordinator.
Johnston said the search committee is hoping Lewis can bring some stability to the principal position.
G.C. Burkhead is the largest elementary school in Hardin County with about 900 students.
