ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown City Council is considering a request from The News-Enterprise to rename two blocks of Strawberry Alley in honor of its former publisher.
Editor Ben Sheroan approached the council Monday asking it to rename the area of the street surrounding The News-Enterprise buildings as Floe Bowles Way. The request involves the northernmost part of the roadway that begins at West Dixie Avenue, intersects with Washington Street and ends at South Maple Street.
Bowles, who died in 2002 at age 90, was a devoted community and civic leader and practiced the value of hard work, honesty and devotion in his years of service to the area, Sheroan said.
The name change would not require any address changes, Sheroan added.
Mayor Tim Walker said the name is fitting because “it really was Floe Bowles’ way.”
If approved, the newspaper plans to hold a ceremony to unveil signage and honor Bowles, who was born in 1912.
