Student remembered during graduation

A North Hardin High School student has died the day after what should have been his graduation day.

Senior Thomas Carmen died at 2:40 Sunday afternoon, Vine Grove Police Chief Dale Riggs said, after sustaining injuries May 12 in a car wreck.

Carmen was a passenger in a vehicle that appeared to have spun out on Crume Road in Vine Grove because of slick road conditions. The car turned about 165 degrees and hit the front of an oncoming vehicle with its back end.

Carmen had been listed in critical condition at University Hospital in Louisville.  He had suffered what police called “disabling” injuries and Principal Bill Dennison of North Hardin said Friday that he had been in a coma.

Carmen's classmates graduated Saturday night at North Hardin High School, and his name was called, giving his classmates and others the opportunity to applaud.

Carmen was a passenger in the vehicle, and he and the other passenger in the back seat received the most serious injuries, Riggs said.

Four passengers in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from Hardin Memorial Hospital.
