Personal principles
Is there a local GOP “letter writing machine” in Hardin County? Republicans don’t sit around waiting for someone to give them something to write about in support of our party agenda. Such synchronized efforts are phoney. Letters which I write to The News-Enterprise express my own views on subjects which I choose in a format which allows me to touch others in this community whether anyone agrees with me or not.
I’ve addressed many questionable liberal notions but never expressed any belief that those who vote liberal are bound to damnation because of President Obama’s support of gay marriage. The God of Israel; my God, makes that judgement. There is a big difference between hate and simple accountability. Liberals hate being held accountable, especially by reformed liberals like me.
Over the years, I’ve found dealing with a conscience can sting like hate. I got tired of being stung. If liberals feel letters published in The News-Enterprise merely opposing their political/religious views are manifestations of hate, tough. We all have freedom of speech. Let them get over it.
The GOP isn’t perfect but it’s the most powerful political option for conservatives in this country. In 1994, I joined it to fight deceitful liberal media-backed actions contrary to my faith and the U.S. Constitution. My current concerns as a black man are overt race games which have developed into an art form under President Barack Obama. Should national GOP leadership ever have functions like the recent DNC convention where large numbers of those in attendance “shout down” inclusion of Judeo-Christian principles in our party platform, I’ll quit the Republicans just like I quit the Democrats in 1994.
If President Obama gets re-elected, it won’t be because of my apathy.

Compassion critical
The 2012 election is a referendum on what kind of nation we want to be. Do we want to be united by compassionate community or divided by individual and corporate selfishness? Support for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and universal healthcare are passions of a compassionate community. America’s moral/spiritual strength and greatness is determined more by the quality and quantity of her safety net than it is by her wealth and military might.
Should President Obama be re-elected, one way to ensure the election result will be honored would be to elect enough Democrats to take control of the House and enough Democrats in the Senate to pave the way for a filibuster-proof majority. It has been 45 years since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote his last book, “Where Do We Go From Here - Chaos or Community?” The question is still pertinent today, maybe even more so. This election’s results will reveal where we want to go. Hope resides in our overwhelmingly choosing community over never-ending political chaos.
