An Ohio man has been charged by Elizabethtown police on two counts of criminal abuse of a child younger than 12 after he allegedly left bruising on two children.

According to the citation, Zachary Moeller, 22, said he spanked the children for not listening to him and not cleaning their room.

Moeller, a resident of Dayton, Ohio, was arrested Sunday night by EPD. The alleged beatings involved relatives he was caring for earlier this month in Elizabethtown.

Moeller is being held in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond. The charges are Class D felonies, punishable by up to five years in prison on each charge.

According to an arrest citation, Moeller took care of the children when their parents were out of town. He reportedly used an open hand to leave a boy with bruises on his buttocks.

A girl had to be treated at Hardin Memorial Hospital for severe bruising on the lower back and buttocks, police said.

Based on the bruising, police defined the force used as excessive.

The alleged incidents occurred between March 7 and 15.

No court date had been scheduled for Moeller as of Monday afternoon.
