By GREG CREWS gcrews@thenewsenterprise.com ELIZABETHTOWN After allowing only one hit in their game Saturday morning, the Benton Harbor (Mich.) All-Stars kept it going in the evening. Ronald Bickham threw four hitless innings before Trevin Alexander finished up the job, allowing just one hit as Benton Harbor shut out the Matteson (Ill.) Panthers, 10-1 in the second round of the losers’ bracket in the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional Tournament at Sonny Chaput Field. Benton Harbor jumped out front early with four runs — all with two outs — in the first inning, and never looked back. Bickham, who was named his team’s Player of the Game, struck out seven runners, while walking two and allowing no runs and no hits. Eddie Caruso earned Player of the Game honors for Matteson. Caruso struck out three, while walking one and allowing 11 hits and two earned runs in a complete-game effort. Eight of the nine Benton Harbor batters who stepped to the plate recorded at least one hit, while all nine reached base. Devin Alexander, Trevin Alexander and Ronnell Gillespie each hit a double and a single. Devin led the offense with three runs batted in, while Trevin brought home one. Brandon Brown hit a two-run single and Bickham and Quentin Erby each hit an RBI-single. Dillon Barnes and Raymone Hayden also singled. Jordan Harrison recorded Matteson’s only hit of the tournament, beating out a grounder to the short stop in the fifth inning. After lining a single to right field in the first inning, Barnes scored what proved to be the winning run as he came home on a wild pitch before Brown knocked home Trevin and Hayden with a hit to right field. Brown stole second and third before being driven in on a shot to left field by Bickham, to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Barnes scored again in the second inning, after reaching base on an error, when he was driven home by Trevin in the second inning for the 5-0 lead. Benton Harbor tacked on three more in the fifth inning as Devin plated Hayden before coming home on an error. On the next at bat, Brown walked on four pitches. He moved to second on a ground out and was driven home by Erby. Devin brought home the final two runs of the game — Trevis and Hayden — with a double to the left-center field gap. Matteson, which lost to Southeast Lexington earlier in the day, was the third team to be bounced from the tournament. Benton Harbor advances to face the loser of Schererville (Ind.) and Louisville Prairie Village at 6 p.m. today in the losers’ bracket quarterfinals.
