Lydia Gumm made waves last year when the North Hardin High School sophomore golf standout shot a jaw-dropping 61 to win the Kentucky Invitational Tournament at the par-70 Lakewood Country Club in Russell Springs for the fifth straight year.
Jaws are going to drop again.
The North Hardin junior duplicated her score Saturday as Gumm recorded her sixth straight KIT victory by eight strokes over Campbellsville’s Ellen Kehoe and Williamsburg’s Becky Sharpe.
Gumm started off great, carding birdies on holes 2, 3, 4 and 5 to finish with a 32 on the front nine.
Then her day got even better.
She birdied six of the final seven holes – a par on 17 broke up the birdie blitz – and she drained a 7-foot putt for birdie on 18 to cover the back in 29 shots.
“I’ve never done that before, to shoot in the 20s, and I’ve always wanted to do that,” said Gumm, who had carded a few 30s for nine holes on various courses.
After winning the Lady Bruin Invitational the previous week at Fort Knox’s Lindsey Golf Course, Gumm admitted that shooting 61 again and repeating as KIT champion would be difficult.
Outside of one three-putt and a blown 2-foot birdie putt, nothing came difficult Saturday to Gumm.
“It was definitely a special day. It’s a great feeling,” Gumm said. “I don’t know what it is about that course, but I love playing on that course and in that tournament.”
Junior teammate Sara Crutcher shot a 95.
BOYS
JOHN HARDIN BULLDOG CLASSIC. North Hardin senior Anthony Irwin carded a 3-over 75 to finish second in the 95-player field at Fort Knox’s Lindsey Golf Course.
Irwin finished runner-up by two strokes to Union Ryle’s Blake Hamilton.
Other area notables include Meade County senior Chase Garris, who finished in a three-way tie for 13th, and Irwin’s teammate Ryan Daniels, a junior who finished 16th. Meade County’s Matt Hewlett and North Hardin’s Brooks Bennett tied with Ryle’s Hunter Hughes and Shelby County’s Reed Mills for 19th, while John Hardin’s Michael Vick was in a six-way tie for 23rd.
Ryle won the team title by six shots over Shelbyville Collins. The Trojans were 13 shots back of Ryle in third, while Meade County was sixth in the 18-team field.
