LOUISVILLE — With strong performances in Friday and Saturday’s 3rd Region Championships at Russell County High School, competitors from three area high schools combined for 27 berths (including alternates) in next week’s Pannell Swim Shop KHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Louisville.

Elizabethtown, which won the girls’ team and combined team titles and finished fifth in the boys’ standings in Russell County, leads the way with 19 berths. Meade County had seven, while Fort Knox had two. The top two finishers in each event in the regional meet were guaranteed state berths, while others could earn at-large berths based on their times to round out the field of 34 or 35 entries per each state event.
State preliminary competition begins at 10 a.m. Feb. 22 for the girls and 3:30 p.m. Feb. 22 for the boys. The state consolation and championship finals begin at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 for the girls and start at 4:15 p.m. Feb. 23 for the boys.
ELIZABETHTOWN. Sophomores M.C. Pepper and Manuela Sampaio and freshman Madeline Rich are each seeded in the top 14 in both of their individual events. Pepper is eighth in the girls’ 500-yard freestyle (5:25.41 region time) and 11th in the girls’ 200 free (1:56.76). Sampaio is ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.10) and 11th in the girls’ 200 individual medley (2:10.23). Rich is 11th in the girls’ 100 free (53.92) and 14th in the girls’ 50 free (24.74).
Three other Elizabethtown swimmers – junior Hannah Godfrey, junior Chase Simmons and sophomore Thomas Deaton – each earned two individual berths. Godfrey is 21st in the girls’ 500 free (5:25.41) and 22nd in the girls’ 100 breast (1:09.31). Simmons is 23rd in the boys’ 200 IM (2:03.30) and 25th in the boys’ 100 breast (1:02.88). Deaton is 30th in the boys’ 100 free (50.12) and 34th in the boys’ 50 free (23.15).
Three Elizabethtown swimmers – freshman Mariana Sampaio, freshman Isaac Lewis and seventh-grader Savannah Kingery – each earned one individual berth. Mariana Sampaio is 17th in the girls’ 100 butterfly (1:00.36), Lewis is 31st in the boys’ 500 free (5:07.61) and Kingery is the first alternate in the girls’ 500 free (5:34.47).
The Lady Panthers’ 200 free relay (1:43.62) of Rich, Mariana Sampaio, senior Natalie Miller and Pepper is seeded eighth, as is their 400 free relay (3:41.54) of Rich, Manuela Sampaio, Pepper and Hannah Godfrey. The Lady Panthers’ 200 medley relay (1:52.66) of freshman Marianna Godfrey, Hannah Godfrey and the Sampaio sisters is seeded 10th.
The Panthers’ 400 free relay (3:26.64) of Simmons, Lewis, eighth-grader Phillip Hayes and Deaton is seeded 15th.
MEADECOUNTY. Senior T.J. Osborne, who earned two individual berths, is 10th in the boys’ 50 free (22.12) and 14th in the boys’ 100 free (49.27). Junior Aaron Bauer is 35th in the 100 back (1:00.46).
Osborne and Bauer join freshman Cody Jobe and senior Nicholas Thoma on the Green Wave’s 15th-seeded 200 free relay (1:33.08) and their 21st-seeded 400 free relay (3:29.67). The Green Wave’s 200 medley relay (1:48.89) of Jobe, junior Mac Montgomery, junior Andrew Popham and senior Kip Caro is seeded 28th.
The Lady Waves’ 200 free relay (1:50.47) of senior Bettelee Lambeth, freshman Cassie Bock, freshman Sydnee Haught, sophomore Hannah King is the first alternate.
FORT KNOX. The Lady Eagles’ 200 medley free relay (2:03.61) of eighth-grader Shannon Brown, sophomore Katie Peterson, eighth grader Katey Kilgore and junior Sabrina Wicker is seeded 31st. The Lady Eagles’ 400 free relay (4:09.89) of Katie Peterson, Brown, sophomore Monica Smith and eighth-grader Miriam Smith is seeded 32nd.
