PREP SWIMMING: Area swim teams hope to take charge in Patton Invitational (11/30)

Second-year Fort Knox swimming coach Jonas Sosa designed the Patton Invitational to prepare teams for the postseason.

That’s why preliminaries and finals are on the same day. It gives swimmers a chance to understand how to prepare for a pressure-packed day.

“The only time we do prelims/finals is at the end of the year at the regional meet and at the state meet. Every other meet at the end of the year is basically timed finals,” Sosa said. “If a kid swims an event and if the kid makes the top 12, they swim again in the afternoon. It’s a tool that I use to have the kids grind it out.”

Local teams Central Hardin, Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, John Hardin, North Hardin and Meade County join Bardstown Bethlehem, Bullitt Central, Bullitt East, Campbellsville, Collins, Frankfort, Frankfort Western Hills, Franklin County, Nelson County, North Bullitt, North Oldham, Ohio County, Shelby County, South Oldham, Taylor County, Thomas Nelson and Louisville squads Fern Creek and Whitefield will compete at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gammon Fieldhouse pool.

There are more than 350 swimmers entered, which tops the 225 total from last year, and the top two boys’ and girls’ teams will be awarded plaques. And there are plenty of local individuals who could contend for titles.

Elizabethtown has seven top seeds – including six on the girls’ side.

Sophomore Manuela Sampaio and freshman Madeline Rich hold two each. Manuela Sampaio owns the top seed in the 50 breaststroke (37 seconds) and 100 breast (1:05.87) while Rich has the top seed in the 50 freestyle (25.50 seconds) and 100 butterfly (1:05.00). Freshman Mariana Sampaio (50 fly, 28 seconds) and freshman Marianna Godfrey (50 backstroke, 31.07 seconds) each own one.

Mariana Sampaio is also seeded second in the 100 individual medley (1:04.88), while Godfrey is seeded second in the 100 back (1:05.52).

Sixth-grader Anna Hayes is seeded second in the 50 breast (37 seconds), sophomore Mary-Charlotte Pepper is seeded second in the 100 free (56.67 seconds) and senior Ashley Hartlage is seeded second in the 50 back (31.71 seconds).

Junior Emileigh McKee is seeded third in the 100 fly (34.60 seconds), senior Natalie Miller is seeded third in the 100 free (59.50 seconds) and seventh-grader Savannah Kingery is seeded third in the 100 back (1:08.88).

On the boys’ side, Elizabethtown junior Chase Simmons holds the top seed in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.57).

Elizabethtown sophomore Thomas Deaton is seeded second in the 50 free (23.55 seconds) and third in the 100 free (50.41 seconds), while freshman Isaac Lewis is seeded second in the 50 back (29.36 seconds).

Meade County freshman Cody Jobe is seeded third in the 100 back (1:03.32), while senior teammate T.J. Osborne is seeded third (53 seconds) in the 100 free.
