PREP SWIMMING: Elizabethtown wins girls' team, combined team titles at 3rd Region Championships (02/10)

The Elizabethtown High School swim team met its lofty expectations on Friday and Saturday during the 3rd Region Championships at the new pool at Russell County High School in Russell Springs.

Sophomore M.C. Pepper won all four of her events to help the Lady Panthers repeat as girls’ team champions, while junior Chase Simmons won the boys’ 200-yard individual medley to lead the Panthers to a fifth-place team finish. Both swimmers’ performances helped Elizabethtown take the combined title, too, after Elizabethtown came within 10 points of pulling off the feat last year in Versailles.

Pepper was the meet’s high-point winner after winning the girls’ 200 freestyle and setting a meet record in the girls’ 500 free in 5 minutes, 11 seconds. She was also a part of the championship girls’ 200 free relay with freshman Madeline Rich, freshman Mariana Sampaio and senior Natalie Miller and the title-winning girls’ 400 relay with Rich, sophomore Manuela Sampaio and junior Hannah Godfrey.

The Lady Panthers went 3-for-3 in the girls’ relays with a girls’ 200 medley win by the Sampaio sisters, Hannah Godfrey and freshman Marianna Godfrey.

Mariana Sampaio added an individual win in the girls’ 100 butterfly, while Rich also won the girls’ 50 free.

Eight Elizabethtown swimmers – Thomas Deaton, Hannah Godfrey, Isaac Lewis, Pepper, Rich, Manuela Sampaio, Mariana Sampaio and Simmons – earned All-Region honors.
