PREP TENNIS: John Hardin pulls upset during opening day of conference (04/19)

In most situations, receiving a first-round bye is an advantage.

John Hardin’s doubles team of senior Jared Anderson and freshman Carson McCann turned their first-round match of the Lincoln Heritage Conference Tournament into their own advantage.

With strong winds having a significant impact on the play at Freeman Lake, Anderson and McCann used their opening-round victory over Fort Knox to get their bearings in the difficult conditions.

Adequately prepared for their second round match, the Bulldogs’ tandem played to near-perfection in dismantling No. 2 seed Daniel Orr and Ethan Wright of Meade County, 6-0, 6-4.

“That wind was crazy,” said McCann, who noted playing in the first round, “definitely helped us.”

The duo was one of just two unseeded entries – Central Hardin sophomore girls’ singles player Riley Keys was the other – to make it through the first day of the tournament and on to today’s semifinals, which are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Freeman Lake.

One of Anderson and McCann’s strategies was to warm up with the wind at their backs to get a feel for how hard they could hit the ball without it going out.

“If you can hit on the wind side, you can easily hit on the other side,” Anderson said. “That’s why we figured it’d be better to warm up on that side.”

Other players agreed.

“It was a mind-changing thing,” said John Hardin junior Tyler Edlin, the tournament’s No. 1 singles seed who took down Meade County senior Zack Ledford in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-0. “You have to adapt to the weather. You can’t hit the same shots and hit the same strokes. You just have to really outsmart your player. You have to play to their weakness and know what they can and can’t do.”

Playing against the wind was a much different animal because as long as a player didn’t hit wide, the ball was staying in.

“We pretty much figured that no matter how hard we hit it, it’s going in,” McCann said.

Just two days after Anderson and McCann topped Fort Knox juniors Robert Bell and Will Ostlund, the Bulldogs’ top doubles squad replicated the feat with a 6-0, 6-0 win to earn the right to face Orr and Wright, who they hadn’t seen this season.

“This is our first year as a doubles team and we’ve been getting used to each other,” Anderson said. “But we’re coming together now.”

The rest of the boys’ doubles field held according to seed as top-seeded Central Hardin seniors Hares Patel and Vasu Patel will face Elizabethtown juniors Faizan Movania and Daniel Crain while Anderson and McCann will square off with Central Hardin juniors Joel Nason and Kyle Compton.

In singles, Edlin gets No. 4 seed and fellow junior Kevin Britt of Central Hardin in one semifinal while No. 3 seed Tad Skaggs of Central Hardin and No. 2 seed Ryan Abell of LaRue County meet in a battle of seniors.

On the girls side, Keys’ reward for knocking out a seeded opponent is a matchup with top-seeded Elizabethtown junior Natalie Fiepke. Fellow Lady Panther and No. 4 seed Lauran Berger meets Central Hardin junior Emily Novak in the other semifinal.

In doubles action, senior Mary-Chapin Snow and sophomore Mackenzie Snow of Elizabethtown showed why they are the top seed in posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory and advancing to the semifinals against North Hardin’s Hannah Lowman and Allie Sutton. Elizabethtown’s senior tandem of Lauren Riney and Lexy Hazle will match up with Central Hardin’s Ashlee O’Brien and Sarah Rineker.

Central Hardin leads the boys’ team standings with the maximum eight points while Elizabethtown is in second with five points and John Hardin is third with four.

For the girls’ team standings, Elizabethtown has the maximum eight points and lead the team standings. Central Hardin lurk in second place with six points and third-place North Hardin has four points.
