PREP WRESTLING: Central's Parr wins weight class at North (01/20)

When freshman Dalton Parr lost his spot in Central Hardin’s starting lineup, he didn’t mope about it.

It just made him work that much more to earn his place – and he made a strong case to be considered for a starting spot Saturday.

Parr defeated Louisville St. Xavier’s Mitchell Esterle, 17-14 to win the 170-pound title at the North Hardin Trojan Invitational Tournament at Ron Bevars Gymnasium.

“I was very motivated,” said Parr, who pinned his first two opponents. “I do not like losing. I wanted to prove I was good and to prove to my coaches that I wanted the starting spot.”

Parr led 9-3 after the first period. Esterle scored three takedowns in the second to trim his deficit to 11-9 going to the third. Parr built a 15-9 advantage and held on by scoring two escapes in the final 30 seconds.

“As a freshman, the kid’s got a ton of heart,” said Central Hardin coach Russ Pike said. “He’s very athletic and he hates to lose. I don’t know if he loves winning or hates losing more, but he’s come a long way. His weight class isn’t easy.”

Parr wasn’t able to earn the starting spot in wrestle-offs during practice last week, but Pike decided to use him as a non-scoring wrestler Saturday.

If Parr wants to receive a starting role, Pike said he must wrestle with the same intensity he displayed Saturday.

“We’ve got some decent kids at 160 and 170, which are the spots he was challenging for,” Pike said. “Our 170s are pretty tough. He had a rough week when it came to wrestle-offs, but we were able to put him in the lineup here and he battled. He’s held his own.”

Parr was 1-of-4 Bruins to win a title for champion Central Hardin, which scored 222 points and also got titles from junior Matt Daugherty (heavyweight) and seniors Joey Pulliam (160 pounds) and Trey Jaco (182).

Jaco hopes the Bruins can carry their momentum into Saturday’s State Duals in Louisville.

“It’s a big win,” Jaco said. “I think everybody’s ready for State Duals and I hope we do well. I’m excited for that.”

Pike is confident they can, especially if they’re at full strength. The Bruins were without senior Cody Mardis (illness) and eighth-grader Grant Hall (competing in the middle school region tournament at John Hardin).

“We still had a couple of kids out,” Pike said. “I’ll just be pleased if we can get everybody healthy and have our normal lineup again. It’s been tough. If we can get everybody healthy and keep everybody focused mentally, we’ll be OK next weekend.”

Louisville Fairdale finished second with 174 points, while North Hardin was third with 158. Ohio County (140) and Harrison County (119) rounded out the top five. Fort Knox finished 12th with 34 points.

106 POUNDS. North Hardin sophomore Jake Burroughs pinned Ohio County’s Kaleb Sap in 3 minutes, 38 seconds.

113. North Hardin junior Kyle Shults beat Harrison County’s Nathan Lopez, 14-4. Shults led 6-1 after the first period. Lopez scored on a reversal and an escape to trim the deficit to 8-4 before Shults scored on a near-fall and two takedowns.

120. North Hardin senior Bradley Pokuta beat Fairdale’s Quentin Newkirk, 10-3. Pokuta led 10-2 in the third period before Newkirk was given a point for unnecessary roughness.

Pokuta was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for lightweights (106-145 pounds).

126. North Hardin senior Trea Wills built a 14-1 lead before pinning Christian Academy of Indiana’s Daniel Doty with 52 seconds left in the second period.

“It was intense,” Wills said. “I was pretty nervous at first because the guy is pretty tall. But I figured him out quick and did what I had to do to get the win. I just have to keep working hard in practice. I’ve got great coaches and a great team behind me. They keep motivating me and pushing me.”

132. Fairdale’s Tristan Sanders beat Ohio County’s Ryan Bunch, 5-3.

138. Harrison County’s Noah Mitchell topped Christian Academy of Indiana’s Trey Sturdy, 10-2.

145. Ohio County’s Jacob Bennett beat Central Hardin senior Andrew Lee, 5-2. Lee led 2-0 after a first-period takedown, but Bennett scored on an escape, a takedown and a reversal.

152.  Ohio County’s Kyle Bunch, the Most Outstanding Wrestler for heavyweights (152 pounds and over), pinned Fairdale’s Immanuel Hill in 13 seconds.

160. Pulliam beat Harrison County’s Vince Whitt, 5-3.

182. Up 2-0, Jaco pinned Williams in 25 seconds.

195. Leading 2-0, Fairdale’s Austin Weird scored five consecutive near-falls to tech pin Central Hardin senior Charlie Sailing, 17-0.

220. Catching him off-guard with a throw-and-pin combination, Fairdale’s Anthony Jennings pinned Trigg County’s Aaron Stevens in 56 seconds.

285. Daugherty, who has been hampered by a nagging ankle injury, beat Ohio County’s Jesse Bunch, 13-9.
