For the LaRue County Hawks and retiring coach Gary Canter, it’s a good thing region championships aren’t won in November.
Six Hawks won their weight class Saturday as the Hawks won their fourth straight 2nd Region Wrestling Tournament championship at John Hardin’s Dawg Pound.
Canter closes his career with 13 region titles.
“If you would have told me this team would win region at the start of the season, I would have said you were crazy,” he said. “I thought there was no way we were going to be able to compete for the region title this year. But they proved me wrong. This team’s just over-achieved all year long.
“It’s a little special,” Canter added. “You say the team score doesn’t matter, but when all the chips fall, you sure as heck want to be on top. This is more about individuals advancing themselves to the state tournament, and that’s what it should be about. But it’s like I tell the boys: if you take care of your job, the team score takes care of itself.”
LaRue County certainly took care of business in the finals. Spurred by seniors Caleb Canter, B.J. Carman and Jared Whitlock, junior Kyle Edlin, sophomore Raymundo Perez and freshman Dylan West, the Hawks scored 221 points to beat the Central Hardin Bruins, who had 200.
John Hardin was third with 147, while Anderson County (113) and North Hardin (109) rounded out the top five. Fort Knox placed 11th with 30 points.
Caleb Canter, who missed three weeks earlier this season with a knee injury, knew it was only a matter of time before his team hit its stride. The Hawks proved they were still the team to beat in the region.
“Looking at our team and how much we’ve grown, it doesn’t really surprise me that we won six titles,” he said. “We’re a solid team and we’ve got some solid kids. Not many programs can say they’ve won 13 region titles.”
106 POUNDS. North Hardin sophomore Jake Burroughs (45-0) pinned Central Hardin eighth-grader Grant Hall (21-11) in 25 seconds. Burroughs led 2-0 when he scored the pin.
113. Boyle County sophomore Lucas McCain (37-8) beat Danville sophomore Zach Phillips (38-15), 8-6. McCain scored the winning points on a stalling call and an escape.
120. Edlin (43-13) beat North Hardin senior Bradley Pokuta (39-8), 6-2. Edlin built a 6-0 lead on two takedowns and a reversal before Pokuta had a reversal in the third period.
126. North Hardin senior Trea Wills was a nervous wreck. His match against Danville junior Daniel Lannum (43-5) went down to the wire – and it didn’t come without controversy.
Wills scored on an escape 9 seconds into the third period and Lannum had a match-winning takedown waved off as time expired, giving Wills (35-1) a 3-2 win. Before the match was declared over, Wills ran to his corner and embraced North Hardin coach Joe Burroughs.
“He’s done a lot for me and he’s an amazing coach,” Wills said. “It’s a dream come true to win region. I can’t wait till State. I knew I had to keep my cool if I wanted to win. I kept my cool and did what I had to do to win.”
132. West (46-4) rolled to a 9-1 win over Central Hardin senior Wyatt Overman (36-7). After a scoreless first period, West scored a reversal and takedown to take a 4-1 lead going to the third. He had a takedown and a three-point near-fall in the third.
138. John Hardin senior Marques Fleet thought he had won the match. So did Perez, who thought he had scored two critical points on a takedown near the end of the second period.
But the match went into overtime after Perez tied the match on a stalling call in the third. Perez appeared to have scored on a takedown as the buzzer sounded in the extra period, but the officials had to confer. After a short discussion, Perez (46-5) was given the points.
“I thought I scored about six points and I felt like they didn’t want to give me the match,” said Perez, who was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. “Marques is a good wrestler and he pushed me. That was a heckuva match. I give him props for all his hard work.”
Fleet (28-6) thought he shouldn’t have been called for stalling in the third.
“In the rulebook it says you need to count 5 seconds in order for stalling to be called, so I was skeptical of that,” he said. “But it is what it is. It was a very intense match. I slipped up a couple of times, but I felt like I had control to an extent. It’s just little things that got me that I need to work on.”
Gary Canter said Perez kept his cool when things started getting crazy during the match.
“There were four or five calls that could have went either way, and I think we came up on the short end of all of them,” he said. “But Raymundo doesn’t get flustered. He will show a lot of facial expressions, but he never gets down on himself. He’s always been that way. He knows if he gets down that it’s not the end of the world.”
145. Central Hardin senior Andrew Lee (40-9) held off LaRue County senior Spencer Hines (15-1), 10-9. Lee took a 9-5 lead early in the third before Hines scored a reversal with 1:20 left. After scoring on a takedown, Hines was shooting in for another takedown when time expired.
152. Central Hardin sophomore Cole Overman (33-11) was leading Fort Knox junior Eugene Grace (18-15), 12-6 when he pinned Grace with 28 seconds left in the third.
160. Whitlock (41-7) beat Boyle County senior Dallin Tritapoe (24-8), 5-3.
170. Caleb Canter (48-0) led 5-0 before pinning Barren County senior Michael Hargrove (10-1) with 52.8 seconds left in the first period.
182. Carman (53-1) was in complete control against John Hardin junior Andre Farris (27-14), as he cruised to a 14-2 win.
195. John Hardin senior Wade Holtsclaw (30-1) built a 5-0 lead before pinning LaRue County junior Tony Couch (40-14) 28 seconds into the second period.
220. John Hardin junior Cameron Mattingly (29-2) scored on an escape in the third period to hold off Central Hardin senior Cody Reeser (21-5), 4-2.
285. Nelson County junior Zac Lawson (31-2) topped Central Hardin junior Matt Daugherty (31-5), 6-3.
3RD REGION TOURNAMENT
In their final year in the 3rd Region, the Meade County Green Wave can finally say they’re best team in the region.
Four wrestlers won titles and Meade County scored 247 points, beating defending champion Louisville Southern by 2 1/2 points Saturday at Louisville Iroquois.
“I am very proud of them,” Meade County coach Bob Davis said. “They did what they needed to do to win. I feel that all of the hard work we have done this season has paid off.”
Sophomore Chris Beeler (113 pounds), junior Jonah Shacklette (160) and seniors Evan Kenealy (182) and Alec Mielke (285) each won their weight classes for Meade County, which qualified 11 wrestlers for the state tournament.
