PREP WRESTLING: John Hardin's Mattingly only area finalist at State (02/17)

LEXINGTON— Though he was facing the state’s top-ranked 220-pound wrestler in his first state championship match, Cameron Mattingly knew he had no reason to be intimidated.

The John Hardin junior had nothing to lose against undefeated Campbell County sophomore Austin Myers during Saturday’s night’s KHSAA State Wrestling Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park’s Alltech Arena.

That’s why Mattingly and John Hardin coach Mike Mitchell aren’t too disappointed with his 15-7 loss to Myers (62-0), who won his second straight title.

Mattingly, who had never placed in the top eight, was John Hardin’s first finalist since the late Jordan Murphy, who was the 130-pound runner-up in 2009 and the 135-pound runner-up in 2010.

“I’m very proud of him,” Mitchell said. “We’ve been working hard over the past five years and that was our goal, to get to the finals in memory of Jordan Murphy. Nobody can take that away from him.”

Myers was in control throughout, building a 6-2 lead after the first period and stretching it to 9-3 before Mattingly injured his knee midway through the second. After action resumed, Myers scored on a takedown and a near-fall to push his lead to 13-4 going to the third.

Mattingly trimmed the lead to 13-6, but Myers had another takedown before letting Mattingly escape near the end of the period.

“It was an awesome feeling watching him in the final,” Mitchell said. “He got to the tournament last year but fell short. Once he got through semifinals, one of his dreams came true.”

While Mattingly was happy with his achievement, the LaRue County trio of 138-pound junior Raymundo Perez, 170-pound senior Caleb Canter and 182-pound senior B.J. Carman were left wondering what-if.

Perez, Canter and Carman saw their state title hopes dashed. Perez lost to Union County senior Jayce Carr in the semifinals, while Carman was knocked off by Campbell County sophomore Eli Matthews in the quarterfinals.

And then there’s Canter, who lost to Walton-Verona senior Lane Jones – the eventual champion – in the second round.

“I didn’t show up,” said Canter, who was undefeated and ranked No. 1 entering the tournament. “I wasn’t ready and didn’t wrestle like I have all year. It wasn’t like me at all. I think I was overlooking him.”

Jones took a 6-5 lead late in the third and held off Canter, who had beaten Jones earlier this season.

“I thought I was going to score back,” said Canter, who went 7-1 at State and placed third. “But I couldn’t get up. He is good on top. I was upset, and I still am. But there’s nothing I can do now.”

St. Xavier won the team title over Campbell County, the defending champion. LaRue County placed ninth with 99 points, while John Hardin tied for 16th with Walton-Verona. Meade County was 18th, Central Hardin 21st, North Hardin 26th and Fort Knox tied for 69th.
