HODGENVILLE — The LaRue County High School wrestling team is back on top in Region 2 – at least for now.

LaRue County went undefeated in the first round of the Region 2 Duals on Friday and Saturday and had six wrestlers go 7-0 in the two-day duals at LaRue County.

“It feels pretty good,” longtime LaRue County coach Gary Canter said. “Obviously, John (Hardin) was missing two in their lineup. I think we wrestled pretty good overall, a lot better than what we did last week. It’s kind of good to be on top again in the region, at least for right now.”

On Friday, LaRue County beat John Hardin, 48-17 and Anderson County, 73-3. The win over John Hardin avenged LaRue County’s losses to the Bulldogs at last year’s duals and region tournament.

The Hawks continued their dominance Saturday, racking up wins over North Hardin (57-21), Central Hardin (51-21), Fort Knox (64-6), Nelson County (69-6) and Danville (72-9).

“Obviously it’s where we want to be. It’s a long season and a lot of things can happen. Time will tell if we’re still there,” Canter said. “We’re happy to be there, but we don’t want to feel like this is the end, because it’s not. We’re happy that we performed well, and hopefully we can keep improving.”

Central Hardin went 6-1, while John Hardin finished 5-2 and North Hardin went 4-3. Fort Knox results were not available.

If the first round were used to determine which teams would represent the region at the KWCA State Duals in January, LaRue County would be a No. 1 seed and Central Hardin a No. 2.

But the region coaches voted to change the format this season. The second round – which will be held Jan. 9-10 at Danville – now determines which teams move on to Lexington Henry Clay in late January.

LOUISVILLE SENECA DUALS. Meade County 4-1 on the day, beating North Oldham (48-33) and Louisville schools DeSales (75-5), Iroquois (63-16) and Atherton (84-0). The Green Wave’s only loss came to host Seneca (53-21).

Dylan Pike (112 pounds) and Tyler Crow (215) went 5-0 for Meade County, while Lance Kelly (103), James Childress (119), Garrett Kenealy (130), Joey Carter (135), Ethan Medley (145), Tanner Cole (160) and Nelson Mason Jr. (171) went 4-1.

BEAST OF THE EAST. John Hardin junior Josh Johnson went 3-2 in the prestigious tournament at the University of Delaware. Johnson lost to Joshua Clark, 10-2 in the consolation bracket’s fourth round.
