Five members of the Radcliff Woman’s Club, Marilyn Williams, Carlo Triplett, Mary Agnes Sears, Becky Brecht and Florence Mason, celebrated the Chinese New Year by having dinner together at the Asian Buffet on Feb. 18.
The get together was orchestrated by the club’s cultural awareness chairman Marilyn Williams, who encourages club members to become better acquainted with other cultures.
According to the Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Snake. The only member present born under this sign was Carlo Triplett. Based on the Chinese zodiac, people born in the Year of the Snake are thought to be wise and intense, with a tendency toward physical beauty.
Members filled their plates with various foods, including the following items which had special significance for the New Year: fish for abundance; noodles, for long life; rice cake, for wealth; dumplings, for progress; and a combination of five or six vegetables for familial harmony.
The evening ended with members contemplating the fortune found inside their cookies.
