Fred Gross, a Holocaust survivor, speaks Tuesday at Waybur Theater at Fort Knox as part of the Days of Remembrance Observance. Gross authored the memoir “One step ahead of Hitler, A Jewish child’s journey through France,” recounting the five-year journey of their flight from Antwerp, Germany, through France and their eventual escape to the U.S. Behind Gross is a photo of the Gurs internment camp in southern France, where he and his family were imprisoned at one point in their journey. Gross now lives in Louisville. The Days of Remembrance, established by Congress, is May 1-8 this year. The observance is from the first Sunday following Yom Hashoah through the following Sunday. U.S. Army Cadet Command hosted the Fort Knox commemoration, honoring the nearly 6 million Jews and 5 million non-Jews who died. The event included Gross’ remarks, a video presentation on justice and accountability after the Holocaust, and a candle lighting ceremony.
