The new Ky. 3005 (Ring Road) interchange on the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway opens to traffic Thursday around mid-day. Work nearly is complete on the project which extends Ky. 3005 from Gaither Station Road to newly established exit 134 on the parkway.

Originally identified in the state’s Six Year Plan in 1998, alignment of the extension was selected in 2003. Right of way plans were completed in 2004. Scotty’s Contracting and Stone, LLC was awarded a $13.1 million contract for the extension in October 2011 and major construction began in spring 2012.

The newly constructed interchange and road will provide more efficient access to the western side of Elizabethtown where many industrial and manufacturing facilities are now located along with the regional airport and the city’s new regional sports complex. It also will provide efficient access to Ky. 361 now under construction once both projects are complete.

A gathering of local officials, contractor representatives and transportation cabinet representatives will be present for a ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday on the south side of the new interchange.
