A Radcliff native has been recognized for his military service aboard one of the largest warships in the world.
Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher Saulsberry has been named the Senior Sailor of the Year on his carrier, the USS Nimitz, in Everett, Wash., and is now competing against other winners on ships on the West Coast.
Saulsberry, a 2000 graduate of North Hardin High School, joined the Navy in 2001. He was nominated for the award by his commander, and competed against others in his department before moving on to a competition among winners in all departments.
To be considered, Saulsberry had to appear before a board and answer questions in a range of topics, including Naval history and current events. The board members also consider aspects like education and accomplishments in the past year.
“It was huge honor,” Saulsberry said, noting many others don’t receive this opportunity.
Saulsberry joined the Navy out of Elizabethtown. He knew he wanted to join a branch of the military long before he joined.
“I come from a history of military,” he said.
With many family members in the Army, he “just wanted to try something different.”
Saulsberry is at an E6 rank, and he said the award will be of great benefit when he seeks a promotion to the E7 level.
The announcement of the results of the winner among West Coast ships will be in January, he said.
