Cecilia area residents and businesses are combining a new school supplies giveaway with family fun this weekend.
The free event is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Howevalley United Methodist Church on Hardinsburg Road to benefit students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
This is the first such giveaway. Area residents and businesses thought it was important to help families take home supplies as students return to school, organizer Miranda Hibbard said.
“We just live in a small community with low-income students and we just thought to offer fun and fellowship at the church and give away free school supplies,” she said. “We just thought that may help out.”
The carnival theme includes a bouncy house, games with prizes, and food.
The first 100 children will receive a goody bag full of supplies such as rulers and crayons, and door prizes of backpacks filled with more supplies are expected to be distributed.
Donations from the church and area businesses to meet the need for supplies aim to show children that they care, Hibbard said.
“They’re not in it just for the money,” she said. “They love the community.”
Residents seem excited for the free food and opportunity to get together and have fun, Hibbard said.
She wants the children who come to feel appreciated.
“I hope they’ll think that people love them and will be there for them and that the surrounding businesses will be there for them,” she said.
Hibbard hopes for a good turnout and a possible repetition of the event in future years.
