Soldier from unit coming to Knox dies in war zone

The Pentagon announced Monday night the death of an infantry soldier in Afghanistan assigned to a unit that will redeploy to Fort Knox.

Pvt. John A. Mattox, 23, of Daingerfield, Texas, died Sunday at Forward Operating Base Bostick, Afghanistan, from injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to the 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. The Pentagon is investigating.

The 1st Infantry, 3rd Brigade will relocate to Fort Knox when it returns from combat next summer. The unit will become the largest tactical military component at Fort Knox upon completion of BRAC transitions.
