ELIZABETHTOWN — The Hardin County Detention Center and Kentucky State Police are investigating the apparent suicide of a female inmate which occurred Tuesday afternoon.

According to a formal statement from the jail, 28-year-old Gloria Porter was found unresponsive in her cell shortly after noon Tuesday.

Kentucky State Police Post 4 spokesman Steve Pavey said a preliminary investigation shows Porter used a sheet as a noose when no one else was around.

Porter, a Vine Grove resident, was booked at the jail Saturday on a parole violation, according to Deputy Jailer Theresa Bailey.

Porter reportedly was alive when jail staff found her, but she was declared dead Tuesday night after being transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital.

This was the only suicide at the jail this year. A young male inmate killed himself at the Hardin County Detention Center last year in a similar incident.

Jail officials are releasing little about the incident to the media.
