Finalists discussed in closed session

The search for a new superintendent for Elizabethtown Independent Schools has progressed to its final phase as the board begins to consider recommendations from the superintendent screening committee.

The committee reported its recommendations for superintendent to the EIS board Wednesday in a special meeting. The report was given in closed session, as it dealt with personnel matters.

Board members previously discussed with the screening committee what they were looking for in a candidate, Board Chairman Tony Kuklinski said, and the committee has been performing tasks such as reviewing applications and checking references.

“The team was very dynamic and very thorough” in their search, he said.

The board can follow the recommendations of the committee or go in a different direction and take their own time reviewing the applicants, he said. Kuklinski said the committee received interest from some “outstanding” applicants.

Kuklinski said the duration of the search now depends on the board, but he expected a decision to be made soon.

The committee consists of Kuklinski, teachers Mary Bell and Dawne Swank, staff member Kenny Barnard, Principal Beth Mather, parent Tehmina Haider and parent/teacher organization member Jeff Gregory.

Superintendent Gary French announced his upcoming retirement in October. French will end his contract term in June. He was selected as superintendent in 2009.
