A former Rebel is moving back to the Commonwealth to become a Wildcat.
Elizabethtown native William Thro has been selected to become the new general counsel for the University of Kentucky. Thro is a graduate of East Hardin High School and a Hardin County Schools’ Distinguished Alumni.
Thro begins Oct. 15. He is coming from the same position at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. He also has served as solicitor general for three attorneys general in Virginia.
Thro said returning to his home state was a big draw for him. He and his wife both have family who live in Kentucky.
“My family and I are enormously excited to come back to Kentucky,” he said.
It was also the chance to work for a large flagship, land grant institution which has renowned programs such as its medical and law schools and athletic department.
“The UK job is just a fantastic job,” he said.
He enjoys the variety of the areas of law he can delve into as an attorney in higher education, including receiving donations, land acquisition and employment, he said.
At Christopher Newport, Thro saw the university change from an open admissions commuter school to a selective liberal arts university, and UK is undergoing changes too. The school is building new facilities and has implemented a new core curriculum, among other initiatives. Thro is excited to be a part of it, he said.
“This is a time of transformation for the university,” he said.
Thro graduated in 1982 from East Hardin High School. He is a member of the 2004 HCS Distinguished Alumni class.
