Tidbits about the Veterans Tribute

So you've seen the Hardin County Veterans Tribute and think you know all there is. Here are a few tidbits that you might not have know.

  • The Army soldier and the civil servant statues face Fort Knox.
  • The Navy statue, the only figure shown saluting, faces due west which is the direction of sunset. Military members salute with the sounding of Taps, played daily at sunset.
  • The Coast Guard figure faces the nearest body of water, Freeman Lake, which is just across Ring Road from the tribute site at Elizabethtown Nature Park.
  • Rich Griendling, whose artistic talent and design skills created the Veterans Tribute, previously was commissioned for two other military memorials. His work also can be seen at the military memorial at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central in Radcliff and the Medal of Honor Tribute at the veterans cemetery in the eastern Kentucky community of Greenup.
