Tornado warnings issued

A series of storm warnings were issued today for counties across the region. The storm front delivered lightning, hail and high winds. The front also spawned funnel clouds and isolated tornadoes.

The afternoon was packed with repeated alerts as warnings were issued for parts of Breckinridge, Meade, Grayson, Hart, Nelson, LaRue and Hardin counties from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

Additional incidents of threatening conditions remain possible. A tornado watch covers most of Kentucky until 9 tonight.

The National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center included Hardin and neighboring counties in a high-risk zone today.

Hardin County Schools decided this afternoon to release students early. North Hardin Christian School, Elizabethtown Christian Academy and Elizabethtown Montessori School also announced early closures.

All Western Kentucky University campuses closed early today in advance of threatening weather, including locations in Elizabethtown, Radcliff and Fort Knox. Elizabethtown Community and Technical College also closed early.

The 5th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament semifinal games scheduled tonight have been postponed until Saturday.

At Fort Knox, an early release of non-essential military and civilian personnel was authorized.

All residents are encouraged to be mindful of rapidly changing conditions and take appropriate precautions if watches or warnings are issued.
