Work in Hart County likely will cause backups, officials say

Motorists traveling south on Interstate 65 through Hart County should be prepared for delays today and Wednesday, the Transportation Cabinet's local office reported Tuesday morning.

Contract crews are working on the bridge over Green River near mile point 62, just south of Munfordville near the rest area. The District 4 highway office issued a release saying work will require reducing the interstate to one lane on approach to the bridge from 7 a.m. to approximately 6:30 p.m. CDT both days.

The traffic advisory suggests that anyone traveling south from Elizabethtown consider using Western Kentucky Parkway to Natcher Parkway and rejoin Interstate 65 on the south side of Bowling Green. Commercial traffic is strongly urged to consider this route, the highway department statement said.

While congestion and delays are expected on the interstate, motorists may find using U.S. 31W as an alternate route just as time consuming.  Traffic overflow from the interstate and local traffic through Munfordville south to Horse Cave is expected to create lengthy delays during the interstate lane closure.

Local motorists along U.S. 31W from Bonnieville through Munfordville to Horse Cave should expect increased traffic volume and may wish to consider using other local roads to avoid congestion, especially midday through the afternoon peak commute.

Work will shift to the northbound bridge beginning Sunday. An advisory will be issued late this week to provide additional details regarding northbound lane closures, the statement said.
