A wreck Saturday morning on Interstate 65 left six dead and two injured and closed the interstate both directions near Sonora for about six hours, Kentucky State Police said.
Police dispatcher Chuck Stewart said two crashes occurred late Saturday morning and were reported 16 minutes apart near the interstate's 83 mile-marker. The first crash was in the northbound lanes of I-65 at 11:13 a.m. and the second in the southbound lanes at 11:29 a.m.
Stewart said six people were killed in the first crash, which involved a passenger van that caught fire. No fatality occurred in the second crash, although an earlier report from the scene provided conflicting information.
Troopers from Post 4 in Elizabethtown are handling the investigation. No details regarding what caused the crashes have been released.
Interstate 65 remained closed until about 5:30 p.m.
