One of the staples of the Christmas season in White Mills has been ruined by vandals.
The lighting on one of the few remaining iron bridges in Kentucky was destroyed Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
The Rev. Tim Dennis, pastor of White Mills Christian Church and a Civic League organizer of the event said vandals destroyed the light display “beyond repair.’’
He said between 200 and 300 lights were stolen or broken, and a lot of the lights were broken free from the bridge with wire cutters.
“It’s just a shame,’’ he said. “We’ve been doing this (having the bridge lighting) for 20-some years.’’
The annual lighting ceremony was held Nov. 28 and include a parade, meal and visit from Santa Claus.
Dennis said about 10 days ago several light bulbs were stolen from the 111-year-old bridge, but the bulbs were replaced.
“It’s one thing to steal the light bulbs, and another thing to vandalize it and destroy it,’’ he said. “We replaced them (bulbs) in two hours. This would be a major overhaul.’’
The bridge lighting is a joint project between the Civic League and the White Mills Fire Department. Dennis said the Civic League handles the expenses and the fire department does the leg work.
He estimated the damage to be around $1,000.
“We’ve had minor problems in the past, but never anything like this,’’ Dennis said.
