Virgil L. Ray

Virgil L. Ray, 84, of Rineyville, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at North Hardin Nursing and Convalescent Center.

He was a lifelong member of St. Brigid Catholic Church and a member of the Father Diemert Council No. 3379 Knights of Columbus, third degree. He was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel, a 60-year member of Local 3223 Indiana/Kentucky Carpenters Union and Local 64 Carpenters Union. His carpentry skills can be seen in many of the buildings in Louisville.     

Born Jan. 31, 1927, he was the last of James and Ozetta Ray’s 16 children to pass away. 

In addition to his parents and siblings including brothers Johnny, Ollie, Anthony, Robert, Clarence and Alton Ray, and sisters Zoe Thompson, Mary Brangers, Claudine Alcorn and Beatrice Ellery, he was preceded in death by his beloved children, Billy Ray, Rosemary Ray Kincheloe and Patty Ray Best.        

He is survived by his beautiful wife of 60 years, Mary Ellen McCorkle Ray of Rineyville; two daughters, Sharon Ray Wren (Harold) of Elizabethtown and Gina Ray Ryan (Mike) of Rineyville; a son, Mark Ray (Robbie Hughes) of Rineyville; a daughter-in-law, Jan Laswell Ray of Rineyville; two sons-in-law, Bobby Best (Lola) of Stephensburg and Nicky Kincheloe of Elizabethtown; 13 grandchildren, Jeff Best, Lisa Best Luken, Zachary, Jacob and Mia Kincheloe, Bradley, Patrick and Kaleigh Ray, Samantha and Blake Ryan, Leslie Ray, Laura Best and J. R. Best; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mary Agnes Ray, Dorothy Ray and Mary Ray; and numerous nieces and nephews.         

The Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday, Nov. 16, at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Vine Grove with the Rev. Dan Lincoln officiating. Burial was in St. Brigid Cemetery.           

Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Vine Grove where handled arrangements.
