Wintry conditions, including sleet, freezing rain and snow, are expected today across Kentucky.
Hardin County Schools and West Point have announced plans to be closed today as have the public schools serving neighboring counties of LaRue, Meade, Nelson, Bullitt, Hart, Grayson and Breckinridge counties. St. James and Gloria Dei schools in Elizabethtown and Leitchfield Christian Academy also are closed today.
Other early closings are possible. For example, the Abraham Lincoln National Historic Park will close at 10 a.m. today because of inclement weather. Consider checking with your destination before venturing out.
The National Weather Service has issued watches and warnings to alert residents of hazardous conditions related to a storm that has plagued much of the country.
Forecasters expect Hardin and LaRue counties to experience rain switching over to sleet and freezing rain today as temperatures slip below 32 degrees as the morning progresses. Total accumulation, including snow later today, is expected to be an inch or so.
Areas north and west of here, including Louisville and southern Indiana, will receive greater amounts of snow and ice, according to the forecasts.
Today's weather is the first of two bands. Another round of snow is expected to reach the area Sunday and it also could be accompanied by icy conditions.
Residents are advised to take precautions in the event of weather-related power outages. Also, motorists should expect travel delays and slick conditions throughout the area.
