A Hardin County woman this week was sentenced to five years of supervised pretrial diversion on two counts of welfare fraud for taking public benefits she was financially ineligible to receive.
Hardin Circuit Court Judge Ken Howard handed down the sentence to Cynthia Michelle Smiley, 32, after she was indicted by a grand jury for providing fraudulent information about her household income to gain $5,311 in food stamps between September 2007 and May 2009 and $5,508 in Medicaid assistance between July 2008 and April 2009, according to court records.
