ELIZABETHTOWN — When Gail Demery was a young girl, she wanted someone to cheer her on and mentor her. Now, she gets to do those things for young girls in Hardin County.
Demery plans to host a Beautiful Girls Empowerment Workshop Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. The free event includes workshops covering body image, team-building, anger management and college planning for girls ages 10 through 16.
Demery expected between 20 and 30 girls to attend the workshop. Now, she has 50 girls registered and about 20 girls on standby.
Demery, who started Demery & Associates in 2007, said she has hosted workshops in the Hardin County area through her business before, but those have been for adult women.
Sshe decided that this year she would host a free event for girls.
She wants the workshop to help girls with the way they talk and dress.
“They are missing it,” Demery said.
Many girls have low self-esteem and she wants to help build them up, she said.
Tiffany Moody, who will give a presentation on communication at the workshop, said some churches and organizations host events similar to the Beautiful Girls Empowerment Workshop, but most of those are for adults rather than girls.
She wants to be a part of the workshop because she wants to be more involved in the community.
The workshop will help girls from all over Hardin County come together, Demery said.
Girls often don’t get out of their geographic areas to build new relationships, she said, but the workshop will help them discover the benefits of networking.
