Zonta members head to district conference in Ohio

Three members of the Zonta Club of Elizabethtown attended the Zonta International District 5 Conference in Sandusky, Ohio on Lake Huron in October. Members attending were: President Ramona Jeffries, Vice President Ruth Ellen Stanley, and Secretary Lois Pierce. Zonta International District 5 is comprised of 17 Zonta Clubs from Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia with more than 90 Zontians present at the conference.

Jacqueline Beaudry, Zonta International Board member, reported on the International service projects that all Zonta Clubs help with around the world and brought special greetings from the International President, Dianne Curtis. The three largest International service projects, with $500,000 given to each, are: Prevention of Mother-to Child Transmission of HIV and Gender-Based Violence in Rwanda; Elimination of Obstetric Fistula and the reduction of Maternal and Newborn Mortality and Morbidity in Liberia; and the Safe Cities for Women Project in Guatemala City and San Salvador, El Salvador.

During the Conference the Zonta Club of Elizabethtown was congratulated on their 25th anniversary and Ruth Ellen Stanley was recognized as a charter member of the club.

Ramona Jeffries gave a presentation before the conference on small clubs and membership challenges and rewards.

Lois Pierce was elected as Area 2 director. Area 2 consists of the Zonta Clubs of Springfield and Cincinnati in Ohio and Paducah, Louisville and Elizabethtown in Kentucky. Her term will begin on June 1, 2012. She is currently the secretary of the Zonta International District 5 Board.
