  • Fields of dreams can be everywhere

    I took a drive the other day and the silver Envoy found some neat places in Hardin County.
    They were the fields of play for our children from long ago, it now seems.
    I drove by University Drive and found myself looking at the ball fields and remembering all the time our family spent there over the years playing, coaching, watching and working in a hot concession stand.

  • A most familiar voice: Mike Bell on the mic

    If you’ve been to a basketball or football game at Central Hardin High School, you’ve heard his voice bellowing over the PA system. Mike Bell has been the voice of CHHS since it opened in 1990.

    Prior to that, he announced games at East Hardin when it was a high school. He announced for girls’ basketball going all the way back to the 1970s.

    His office at Glendale Christian Church is lined with plaques featuring previous teams and their photos. There are even more in his office at home.

  • Poe volunteers for Lady Panthers ‘evermore’

    It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t have a daughter on the Elizabethtown High School girls’ basketball team.

    It doesn’t matter that he lives in Bardstown.

    Former Elizabethtown resident John “Chico” Poe has immersed himself in volunteer roles for the Lady Panthers. He drives the bus for the girls’ team and keeps stats.

    “I help out any way that I’m able,” he said.

    Poe enjoys sports and attends any good game he hears about, he said.

    In the United States, tooth decay affects children more than any other chronic infectious disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
    Children with poor oral hygiene and untreated tooth decay — cavities — can develop pain and infections that can cause problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning.
    In a 2000 U. S. Surgeon General’s report it was estimated that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness.
    February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.

  • Lifted up from the depths: Rick Green celebrates 15 years of sobriety

    In jail, on his knees, Rick Green’s life changed.

    “I prayed to God right there on the jail floor, ‘please kill me or heal me,’” Green said, following years of struggling with addiction.

    At that point in his life, he was tired of living and in jail for a DUI. He was chased by the Indiana State Police for more than an hour and couldn’t remember any of it when he woke up in jail.

  • Touching the intangible: NCEF president Al Rider promotes education

    Al Rider took a leave of absence from his job in Tennessee to help the North Central Education Foundation in Elizabethtown, his former town of residence.

    That was 20 years ago.

    “I came back with the intent of helping the foundation raise money for the college,” Rider said.

  • WQXE's Greg Milby is not a normal morning show host

    Greg Milby starts his day earlier than some — 3:30 a.m. to be exact.

    Early in the morning, Milby commutes from Corydon, Ind., to Elizabethtown to co-host the WQXE morning show “Greg and Hollie in the Morning.”

    He’s been making the drive for 10 years but will move to Elizabethtown soon. It will give him more opportunities to serve in Hardin County and shortening the drive gives him more time with his wife, Jennifer, and their two sons.
