  • Sellers earns Eagle Scout award

    Brian Sellers, of 499 Double D Road, Guston, Kentucky 40142, has earned the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award.

    Sellers will be recognized in a ceremony on May 5 at the Hansen Community Center. A member of American Red Cross Troop 155, Sellers is one of approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster, Carl Cook.

  • West speaks to Elizabethtown Lions Club

    Michelle West, a representative of Lowe’s Home Improvement Center in Elizabethtown, was the guest speaker at the March 6 meeting of the Elizabethtown Lions Club. She spoke on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, seeking the club’s support of their fundraising drive. She mentioned many ways in which funds help children and adults stricken by the debilitating diseases that fall under the umbrella of muscular dystrophy, and the importance of seeking cures through research.

    Recently the 2012 Hardin County Young Farmers State winners were announced. 2012 Kentucky Young Farmer Member of the Year is Kerby Grey; Ag. Mechanics Proficiency Contest, Drew Langley, third place; Farm Management Contest, Josh Seagraves, first place and Nathan Highbaugh, tied for second place; Rural Leadership Award, Mark Thomas, second place; Wheat Production, Patrick Preston, first place; White Corn Production, Phillip Rogers, first place; and Diversified Crop Production, Mark Thomas, second place.

  • 18 Take the Penguin Plunge

    More than 18 brave individuals took part in the first Penguin Plunge to help provide Hardin County students with Junior Achievement’s financial literacy programs. The event raised more than $9,114.

    Teams and individuals took a plunge for the Penguin Plunge on March 3 at the Bluegrass Cellular headquarters in Elizabethtown.

    In 2011-12, Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana will serve more than 1,000 students in Hardin County.

  • Day Treatment Students Learn How to Pay For Cancer Research

    Students at Hardin County Day Treatment is participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program, one of LLS’s national School & YouthPrograms that raises money to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma while providing information and support services to patients and their families. This is the second year that students have participated.

  • New chapter of Friends of the Library formed

    A new chapter of the Friends of the Library, a non-profit organization created to support and celebrate the Public Library of LaRue County, has been formed by a group of concerned citizens in Hodgenville.

    Lynn Claycomb, a long-time educator in the local school system, presides over LaRue County’s chapter which is affiliated with the state’s Friends of Kentucky Libraries.

  • Engineers deployed from Fort Knox complete 220 projects in Afghanistan

    KANDAHAR Airfield, Afghanistan — Members of the 533rd Engineer Detachment, Forward Engineer Support Team-Main have completed 220 engineering projects in Afghanistan since deploying April 4 from Fort Knox. The count is continuing.

    Maj. Gen. Kendall P. Cox, commander of Transatlantic Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, praised team members March 1 at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan.

    “You guys are phenomenal. Completing 220 projects is huge,” Cox said.

    Gerda Gardner of Radcliff and Tyrone Gardner of Fort Mitchell, Ala., announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Jessica M. Gardner, to Joshua M. Cooper, son of Patricia Cooper of Radcliff and Jerry Cooper of Greenville, Miss.

    The bride-to-be is a 2011 graduate of the University of Louisville with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She is pursuing a master’s degree in social work at U of L.
