• Swain celebrates 87th birthday

    Lester Swain of Traverse City, Mich., and Elizabethtown will celebrate his 87th birthday Feb. 3, 2014, with his family.

    He was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Dearborn, Mich., the son of the late Theodore and Ethel Swain. He married his wife, Shirley Swain, on Oct. 14, 1950, and retired from the Detroit Board of Education in January 1987. He is a clock maker and enjoys woodworking.

  • Larry Thomas receives top recruiter award

    For the third consecutive year, the Kentucky Soybean Association’s Top Recruiter Award went to Larry Thomas of Elizabethtown. Thomas was recognized during the 2014 Kentucky Commodity Conference recently held in Bowling Green.

    The Kentucky Soybean Association is a grassroots organization and its leaders are proud of the members they represent. Keeping a strong voice in Frankfort and in Washington D.C., is extremely important, but at the same time recruiting members often is one of the toughest jobs as a member of the board.

  • Woman’s Club of Elizabethtown members host annual spaghetti supper

    The Woman’s Club of Elizabethtown’s annual spaghetti supper, held Jan. 16 at the Brown-Pusey House, was an overwhelming success. There also was a silent auction, which brought in a larger profit for this fundraising event.

    Atria Senior Living provided the complimentary spaghetti, salad and bread for the evening. Club members brought their favorite desserts

  • Lye speaks at AM Rotary Club meeting

    The Hardin County AM Rotary Club President Daniel Tabb welcomes Dr. Adam D. Lye with the Hardin Memorial Hospital Cancer Care Center to the Jan. 24 meeting of the club. Dr. Lye discussed the positive differences being made in the fight against cancer, as well as the future relocation of the HMH Cancer Care Center to Robinbrooke Boulevard.

  • Funk speaks to Elizabethtown Rotary Club members

    Elizabethtown Rotary Club President Val Claycomb, left, welcomes special guest speaker Linda Funk, founding director of Warm Blessings, the local soup kitchen. Funk reported on the growing services provided by Warm Blessings and the upcoming Empty Bowls fundraiser. Some in the community have empty bowls; and some in the community strive to help fill those bowls.

  • Radcliff Woman’s Club members gather to write annual reports

    Members of the Radcliff Woman’s Club who are involved in developing reports for the organization met Jan. 13 at Colvin Community Center to do the “write” thing. During the meeting, they reviewed report writing techniques and requirements.

  • Salvation Army appreciates community support

    Christmas isn’t over at The Salvation Army until we say “Thank you,” to the Hardin County community for your support of The Salvation Army’s Christmas Cheer Program. This year we provided toys and clothing to 245 children and Christmas dinners to 921people in Hardin County. This would have been impossible without the generous support of organizations and individuals giving of their time, energy and resources to make Christmas more cheerful for our less fortunate neighbors.

  • Republican Women to host Jim Waters

    The Hardin County Republican Women’s Club (HCRWC) will host Jim Waters, president of Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions, Kentucky’s first and only free market think tank at 6 p.m. Feb. 18, at Stone Hearth in Elizabethtown.

    KENTUCKY WEATHER. We got some measurable snow last week but it sure has turned bitter cold again. After all, it is still winter. We just have to grin and bear it. Just stay warm when going out. Also, might be a good idea to put a few blankets in your vehicle, just in case your vehicle breaks down or you get stuck in traffic.
