    Darrin and Melissa Goodman of Elizabethtown announce the birth of a son, Parker Shane Goodman, on Aug. 8, 2012, at Hardin Memorial Hospital. He weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces and was 20 inches long.

    Maternal grandparents are Gerald and Sheila Murphy of Hodgenville. Paternal grandparents are Ronnie and Carolyn Goodman of Cecilia.

    Great-grandparent is Ival Rainey.

    The Fort Knox Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars participated in the Eagle Scout Court of Honor recognizing Eagle Scout Chaffin Blair on Aug. 5 at Stovall United Methodist Church.

    Joseph Cross, deputy director of the executive services division, Fort Knox, recently was trained and certified as a protocol officer by The Protocol School of Washington. The training was held at The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner in McLean, Va.

    HEFNER. Navy Seaman Recruit Alexandra R. Hefner, daughter of Valerie E. and John R. Hefner of Elizabethtown, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. Hefner is a 2010 graduate of Richmond Hill High School in Richmond Hill, Ga.

    COSGROVE. Marine Corps Pvt. Ryan A. Cosgrove, son of Liela S. and Michael A. Cosgrove of Vine Grove, graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S. C. Cosgrove is a 2006 graduate of Meade County High School.

  • USA Cares offers grants to veterans

    USA Cares if offering financial assistance grants to eligible Kentucky Veterans. Applicants must be an active duty, National Guard or reserve soldier, sailor, airman, Marine or Coast Guardsman or a veteran. Veterans must be enrolled in a Kentucky Community and Technical College. Financial assistance from this fund is restricted to Post 9-11 veterans to secure employment.

    The Garden Club of Elizabethtown celebrated its 40th anniversary Aug. 5 in the ballroom of the Brown-Pusey House. Begun by like-minded men and women who gathered together to form the club in 1972, the group has maintained an active presence in community activities.

    Following the tradition of The Woman’s Club of Elizabethtown, the book “Natural Companions: The Garden Lover’s Guide to Plant Combinations” was donated to the Hardin County Public Library in memory of Esther Doyle Fuqua, former president of the Woman’s Club in 1976. The book was presented to the Director of the Public Library Rene Hutcheson, right, by member, Mitzi Crowe, chair of the Library Committee.
