  • Special effects destroy Superman in 'Man of Steel'

It’s been 35 years since Christopher Reeve stepped out in blue spandex and into our hearts as the iconic Superman. DC Comics has had a hard time recreating that magic in modern renditions and tried once again in “Man of Steel.”

    They tried and failed.

Everything that made Superman, well, Superman, is missing from this movie.

Filmmakers wanted to distinguish this attempt from previous tries so much that it is hardly recognizable.

  • Long to-do list leaves too much to think about

Focus eludes me. I’ve got strings tied to every finger and lists all over. But it’s all yapping at me, refusing to be categorized and conquered.

Mostly, family logistics is what makes me crazy.

  • Jon Taul’s music rooted in rural life

Driving around his family’s Cecilia farm in a golf cart with his dog, Dakota, at his side, Jon Taul talked about his family, rural influences and country music.

Fields, barns and antique Oliver tractors he helped his grandfather refurbish all contribute to the roots of Taul’s music.

Home educated, Taul spent a lot of his spare time on the farm. His first job, at age 17, was with the family business, Taul Equipment.

  • First step: Admitting you have a karaoke problem

OK, I’m not sure how this happened, but my home has become a part-time karaoke bar.

OK, I do know how it happened, but I’m not telling.

    OK, I’m telling.

You see, it all began with a karaoke machine. It was one of those portable units that needs to be hooked up to a TV or monitor. I bought it for my other half, Rebecca Ricks, for Christmas about a year and a half ago.

That’s how it starts: you think the karaoke is going to be limited to a whimsical pastime with your sweetie.

  • Wilson, Vaughn try to make the cut in 'The Internship'

“Wedding Crashers” co-stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn reunite in the summer comedy “The Internship.”

In a sea of R-rated comedies, some of which are pretty hard-R-rated, a PG-13 option is refreshing. “The Internship” pushed the boundaries of a PG-13 film with its language and sexual conversations, but the 35 and older crowd will relate to its subject matter.

As job opportunities and the modern marketplace grow more high-tech, the people most qualified for those roles tend to be younger.

  • HCP travels to 'South Pacific' in latest production

The theater of war in the South Pacific is the backdrop for “South Pacific” in a theater in Elizabethtown as Hardin County Playhouse presents their production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical.

The play opens tonight at Plum Alley Theater in the Historic State Theater Complex.

Co-director and actor Bo Cecil said the “cultural memory” of the era adds to the romantic atmosphere of the musical, which is set on a South Pacific island during World War II.

  • Smiths use 'After Earth' as bonding project

In “After Earth,” the Earth has been abandoned and humans have settled on a new planet. But father and son Cypher and Kitai — played by real life father and son Will (“Men in Black 3”) and Jaden Smith (“The Karate Kid”) — have crashed on Earth, now inhabited by ravaging wildlife and environmental dangers.

Kitai has to venture into the dangerous wilderness to find a distress beacon to signal for a rescue. Along the way, he must face his fears to defeat a deadly enemy.

  • Playing outside is a good thing

Remember when you were a kid and the sweet freedom that came when school was out for summer? A time filled with adventure soon followed.

Those were the days when you played outside until dark or until you accidentally buried your Yoda action figure in the flower garden and were too sad to play because he was lost. Maybe that was just me.

  • Musicians honor the missing with concert at Freeman Lake Park

Local musicians will band together Saturday at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown to bring awareness to the missing in Kentucky and support the owners and their dogs who search for missing people.

The concert, Song for the Missing 2, begins at noon Saturday and features 10 bands performing throughout the day.
